What does body fat mean?

"Overweight" refers to having an excess of body weight compared to height. Obesity is an excess of body fat that results in harmful effects to the body. Normal healthy body fat levels are 16%-22% for males and 18%-28% for females. There are differences of opinion concerning exact body fat levels but a person needs to maintain levels no higher than those recommended in this text.

Is there a connection between television watching and obesity?

Definitely, yes! Obesity among children, adolescents and adults increases with more hours of television watched. In one study, men who watched 4 or more hours of television a day doubled their risk of diabetes (Obesity often leads to diabetes and watching significant amounts of television leads to obesity.). In addition, eating in front of the television can increase a person’s risk of obesity and diabetes.

What are the dangers of being obese?

Obesity has been linked to the chronic degenerative diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, strokes and certain cancers. In a telephone survey study of close to 200,000 adults, it was found that those who were overweight or obese were more likely to have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, arthritis, and poor health overall. In a different study of 10,000 adults, it was found that those who were obese had 30%-50% more chronic medical conditions than even smokers or problem drinkers did. Obesity can also increase the risk factors of cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure, abnormal blood fat levels, left ventricular hypertrophy (heart enlargement), and abnormalities in clotting. Obesity can also increase the chance of death from cardiovascular disease and increase the risk of heart failure. Being overweight or obese is also associated with higher chances of getting cancer, particularly breast cancer in women past menopause, prostate cancer, large bowel cancer, endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer. The risk of breast cancer in a woman past menopause is 50% higher; the risk of colon cancer in men is 40% higher; and the risk of endometrial cancer is five times higher in people who are obese. Some studies have also shown a positive connection between obesity and cancers of the kidney, pancreas, rectum, liver, and esophagus.

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body mass index (BMI) is a way to assess if a person is at the proper weight for their height or if they are overweight or obese. A value of 25-30 is considered overweight, and over 30 is considered to be obese. BMI is calculated using height and weight (the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters). In a study of almost 6,000 people, for every one-point increase in the body-mass index (being fatter), the risk of heart failure increased by 5% among men and 7% among women. Even if a woman is overweight, the study showed that she would have a 50% greater risk of heart failure compared with women who have a normal body-mass index. This study demonstrates that the more you weigh, the more likely you are to have heart failure.

Which foods should I eat in order to avoid obesity?

A wide variety of foods is essential for any diet whether a person is trying to lose weight or not. For weight loss, it is generally recommended to eat foods from plant sources such as grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans/legumes. Five or more servings of fruits and vegetables are the amount necessary to have the desired effect. You should also decrease the quantity of meat, dairy and high fat foods. Certainly you need to eliminate or reduce the amount of junk food in the diet. Junk food includes potato chips, cookies, cakes, ice creams, etc. Drinking plenty of water and less soda and alcohol would also be beneficial. Add fruits for snacks and be creative using fruits for deserts. It is difficult to make general recommendations in regards to weight loss because there are so many other variables that need to be addressed on an individual basis. However, a 1500-calorie per day diet, consisting of 5 small meals spread throughout the day is a typical recommendation.

Are most Americans following the recommendations mentioned above?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. The typical American diet pattern is unhealthy. The typical food pattern consists of high intakes of red meat, processed meat, refined grains, sweets and desserts, French fries, and high-fat dairy products. People who follow this eating pattern also are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol, and are less likely to exercise. Most Americans have too high a salt intake, with most of it coming from highly processed foods. Sugar intake is also very high, and has increased over the past decade. According to some, Americans eat 20 teaspoons of refined sugar in a single day. If this is done for a year, keeping all other variables the same, the person could gain 42 pounds of body fat. Approximately 1 out of 8 calories that Americans eat come from saturated fat (the bad fat if consumed in excess), with 75% of it coming from ground beef. Americans, overall, eat an estimated 200 hamburgers per second. Thus, the American pattern can lead to obesity, overall disease and a decreased life span.

What can I do to lose weight?

One of the best things you can do to lose weight is to exercise regularly. Researchers have demonstrated that most people who lose weight and maintain the weight loss participate in regular exercise. Aerobic exercise (brisk walking, jogging, running, swimming, biking, cross-country skiing, etc.) can help burn calories and tone muscles, which can lead to weight loss. Also, strength training exercises can increase muscle mass and help burn calories as well. In addition, most studies demonstrate that children and adults who are obese tend to stay in bed longer, are less active, watch more hours of television and use a car more than those who maintain normal body weight. If you accept these facts, then simply making minor adjustments in your life can help to keep your weight under control. For example, start by parking your car farther from where you want to go. If you pull into the grocery store, do not do what so many of us do and look for the closest parking spot. Park farther away and walk. Although not extremely significant in the short-term, in the long-term, this can help maintain correct body weight by burning off some calories. Another idea is to reduce the hours of watching television. Find a hobby or interest that can take you away from the television and, even better, find something that is slightly more physical. Even something less active or physical, such as gardening, can be helpful if you replace watching television with it.
